Project Golden Dump

Natural Farm and Relocation Center

In November 2011 Nadia and Barbara with burmese families and burmese people in charge, reorganized the Golden Dump Project after one year from its beginning. There was the need to find an other more appropriate land and the need to move those families which since last year used to live in Mae Sot rubbish dump. After weeks of research we fund a land suitable for agriculture, with all the indispensable features for farming: suitable ground, water, school for children located next to the land. More than this, the owner is a burmese man who lives in Thailand since more than 40 years: that's means no more  psychological pressure for “our burmese families”. Actually there are two works in progress: the two floors houses building and the water tank cistern construction (used for plantations). The land was already provided with bathroom, chilli and courgette plants. Among the four families who are benefit from relocation Project, Aye Than one moved to Burma for health family reasons, however they are sure to come back again once their family situation get better. Actually 6 adults and 6 children live in the new land (one baby is coming to live very soon: he is Mee Mee's child). The village is about 20 Km far from Mae Sot and its inhabitants are Thai-Karen. We had the pleasure to meet the head quarter of the village, who gave us all of his support to help family and to receive children into the migrant school. When the school year begin (in June) all the children could benefit from this service. We endowed families with covers, mosquito nets and all what they need to build houses and water tank cistern.

Organic farming works -without pesticide and chemicals- are going to start very soon. Kaw Maw Taw, an expert on Natural Farming, will monitor the Project and teach the best way to cultivate (a special thanks to Mark Cox -UPLift Project- who gave us precious advises and fundamental knowledge in this field). The main goal of this Project is to let families be independent, teaching them to grow with lowest cost. In this way they could sell their products with more benefits. An other important goal is also give an education to their children.

Golden Dump "Natural Farm and Relocation Center"  is a Krio Hirundo micro-project. Financial partner: “Angeli del Focolare”.

Clay project Mae Sot 22 January-6 February

Hi everyone, first of all I'd like to introduce myself: I'm Eva Benelli, Italian, 38 years old.
I'm an artisan and work with terracotta (my website www.lefoio.com). I taught clay handicraft at the High School and I'm currently holding a ceramic course for disabled 400e in Italy.

The Clay project was born during an exchange of ideas between Nadia, president of the Krio Hirundo Onlus, and me. I want to thank her so much.

Last summer I suggested Nadia holding a course in Mae Sot to teach students and teachers from Burma/Myanmar and from the Karen minority the basics of clay's manufacturing and to build a ceramic oven.

The direction of Krio Hirundo approved immediately this project and started her fundraising in order to cover the material costs. We needed a location for the course and had to organize the students' transport. Nadia got in touch with the president of Help Without Frontiers, Benno Röggla, and we started together a cooperation to organize this course. He was enthusiastic about our project.

I'd like to use this occasion to thank all the coordinators, translators, volunteers, etc. of Help Without Frontiers for their kindness, for giving us the location and for organizing everything. It was an unforgettable experience. I was impressed by the reliability and the involvement of the students and the coordinators. The aim of the project was to teach the students about the basics of clay's manufacturing, so that one day, if they will be interested in doing it, they will have the possibility to start a handicraft activity, maybe in Burma.

I know that 20 days are not enough to understand everything but, in my opinion, there are some students who have the “artistic skills” to start an activity like this one. I hope that I left something in the heart and in the “hands” of all my dear students. My biggest thanks goes to them, for accepting me, listening to me and giving their best to learn something so different from their reality. I wish everyone good luck and good work!

With love,

Eva

The Krio Hirundo Onlus has the pleasure of donating the oven which was built from the volunteers during the clay course to Help Without Frontiers. The students will have the possibility to use the equipment and the material left from the organization with the hope to repeat this experience next year.
